Alternative Medicine An Easy Pill to Swallow

Alternative HealingLet’s face it. Americans live in a society that is encouraged to follow Western healthcare philosophies and procedures, which often include prescribed medications and sign-your life-away procedures. Prescribed and over-the-counter (OTC) medications are often necessary and often not. Ditto for a multitude of procedures we find ourselves considering as our only options through a mindset of go under the knife or take a pill.

Don’t assume I’m bashing Western medicine practices, though. As a retired medical laboratory technologist, past medical sales representative, past hospital patient/staff liaison and current practicing massage therapist and esthetician, I have been a giver and a receiver of both Western and Eastern practices.

Yes, all of us would be in a heap of healthcare trouble without medical doctors, chiropractors and dentists, for example, but it is when we acquiesce to Western medicine procedures and protocols such as surgery and/or pill popping without researching other treatment plans, that we may be choosing the wrong path for the desired long term results.

I’ve discovered that the key to exploring and discovering non-invasive complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) for our “isms,” ailments, syndromes and dis-eases is to open our minds to all that is available, and of course affordable (that’s another story).

Take acupuncture, for example. My testimonial after receiving recent treatments for a painful skeletal neck “ism” is that 2 treatments diminished my dysfunction, and my pain level of 10 to a 0. After 3 months and no recurrence, I am amazed! If I had not opted to try something different, I would have never known the benefits of acupuncture. What pill could I have been prescribed that would allow me to work, drive, and go about my daily routine? This one example of alternative medicine has changed the way I think about  healthcare options forever.

There is a need and a place for both traditional and holistic medicine and the two can work together. Massage, acupuncture, and herbal remedies, to name a few alternatives, are available. I don’t know about you, but for me, it’s an easy pill to swallow.
